A fair, multidisciplinary variety of paintings, photographs and sculptures of four different artists is hosted at the Contemporary Art International Gallery in Hamburg.

The works of Kenji Hirata, playful and colorful as they are, immediately catch the viewer’s eye. His paintings evoke memories from the late 70s and 80s, in which TV-games, cartoons and the possibilities of virtual, interconnected worlds were becoming trade elements of the world market. Hirata wants to offer a promise of hope to humanity and through his works he aims to create a serene return to Neverland.

Ryo Hamada, the only female artist of the exhibition, is represented with a series of photographs mainly stemming from the years 2006 and 2007. After a discussion with Miss Sato, the owner of CAI, it became clear to me that Hamada’s blurry pictures represent an attempt to immortalize memories - what we have experienced we cannot ever again visualize fully: a part of it, its emotional impact, echoes inside us forever. Her works stand for the certainty of the occurrence of these events and their doubtful intangibility.

Etsuro Kato and Satoshi Katono are the two other artists of the exhibition. Their current representation is only partial; therefore the interpretation of their works – these fascinating and deeply Japanese mini empires of signs - is confined to mentioning them.

4 moderne Japanische Künstler

Vier Künstler sind mit einer multidisziplinären Auswahl an Gemälden, Fotografien und Skulpturen zu Gast in der Contemporary Art International Galerie in Hamburg.

Die Werke Kenji Hiratas fangen, verspielt und bunt wie die sind, den Blick des Betrachters als erste. Seine Gemälde rufen Erinnerungen an die späten 70er und 80er Jahren wach, als Fernsehspiele, Zeichentrickfilme und die Möglichkeiten virtueller, miteinanderverbundener Welten anfingen, Bausteine des Weltmarkthandels zu werden. Hirata verspricht der Menschheit Hoffnung und will durch seine Werke eine gelassene Rückkehr ins Nimmerland hervorrufen.

Ryo Hamada, die einzige Künstlerin dieser Ausstellung, ist mit einer Reihe Fotografien vertreten, welche hauptsächlich aus den Jahren 2006 and 2007 stammen. Nach einer Diskussion mit Fräulein Sato, Besitzerin der CAI, ist mir klar geworden, daß die verschwommenen Bilder Hamadas einen Versuch darstellen, Erinnerungen zu verewigen - das, was wir erlebt haben, können wir uns nie wieder in seiner Gänze vorstellen: ein Teil davon, die emotionale Wirkung, hallt ewig in uns wider. Hamadas Werk steht sowohl für die Gewißheit, daß diese Ereignisse geschehen, sowie für deren zweifelhafte Unbestimmtheit.

Etsuro Kato and Satoshi Katono sind die beiden weiteren Künstler der Ausstellung. Sie sind zur Zeit nur mit einer eingeschränkten Auswahl an Arbeiten vertreten, weswegen sich hier auf eine bloße Erwähnung ihrer Werke - dieser faszinierenden und zutiefst japanischen Empire of Signs- beschränkt werden soll.
